Be part of an immersive cultural weekend experience, taking place on 20-22 October at Costa Navarino. Linked to the exhibition “Under the spell of Greek costume: Contemporary creations animate the Benaki Museum collections”, this weekend is an inspiring journey from tradition to modern time, guided by designers and artists of the exhibition.

From interactive discussions with the designers and interviews with internationally acclaimed journalists, to innovative presentations, enticing performances and philosophy walks in the Messinian countryside, participants that are interested in Greek tradition and fashion, will have the opportunity to meet the creators in person and learn more about their work while discovering the infinitude of Greekness in fashion and aesthetics.

An exclusive accommodation package has been designed for those wishing to participate in this unique weekend experience. The package includes 1 or 2 nights stay, a welcome cocktail reception and a lunch on Saturday 21 October as well as complimentary participation to all activities. The program of the activities will be soon available.

The designers and artists exhibiting at Costa Navarino are: Jean-Paul Gaultier, Mary Katrantzou, Sophia Kokosalaki, Zeus+Dione, contemporary artists Konstantin Kakanias, from The Breeder Gallery Blind Adam and Sofia Stevi, from Eleftheria Tseliou Gallery Antonakis, Chrysa Voudouroglou, Vassilis Zografos, Apostolos Karastergiou and Margarita Myrogianni, as well as the Mentis Centre for the Preservation of Traditional Textile Techniques of the Benaki Museum, and The Lyceum of Greek Women of Kalamata.

The cultural weekend “Under the spell of Greek costume” coincides with an important milestone of the region: the “Navarinia” celebrations, which take place every year to commemorate the historical Battle of Navarino.

EXPERIENTIAL ACTIVITIES

Traditional Greek Costumes Presentation

Attend an exclusive presentation of rare and authentic Greek traditional costumes from the unique collection of The Victoria G. Karelias Collection of Greek Traditional Costumes. The selected costumes represent the basic 3 types of traditional Greek costumes, and Mrs. Sofia Kapetanaki, Professor of the Peloponnese University and member of the Board of Directors of the Lyceum of Greek Women of Kalamata will be your guide on their particularly striking and unique features.

Interlude

Follow a surrealistic free flow of images that evoke an important part of Greek antiquity. The Greek artist, Blind Adam from The Breeder Gallery, presents his visualized poem "Interlude", performed in 3 acts.

Philosophy Walk

Discuss “Aesthetics in Ancient Greece” through the prism of ancient Greek philosophical thinking. A discussion led by Dr. Eleni Volonaki, Professor of Philosophy, takes place during a leisurely walk in the idyllic Messinian countryside, amidst hundreds of centuries-old olive trees.

Art Tour

Take a guided tour of original works dating to the 17th-19th centuries, while learning the fascinating history behind them. During the tour, you will also admire the original creations of contemporary Greek and international artists.
The tour ends with a guided tour at the exhibition “Under the spell of Greek costume: Contemporary creations animate the Benaki Museum collections”.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Only children older than 12 years of age are permitted to attend the social events on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 October. Such participation in also subject to the accompanying person’s fee.
